Knowledge and resources
ForUM is recognised for it's expert skills within development, environment and human rights. The secretariat, the international network, the member organisations an external specialist all contribute to policy suggestions.
As a think tank for 54 organisations, ForUM’s most important resource is the engagement and competences that the member organisations bring to the network. The organisations contribute to the work of the thematic groups – where ForUM’s secretariat has a leading and coordinating role – as well as in ad hoc processes.
The secretariat at ForUM is currently recognised for its expert skills within developmental issues, international politics, land use and natural resources, media, human geography, human rights and political science. Decision makers and the civil service ask for, and listen to, advice from ForUM’s employees. The staff are also regularly invited to participate in Norway’s official delegations to international meetings.
ForUM’s secretariat has representation on several international and national boards. ForUM employees are also invited as guest speakers nationally and internationally, and publish articles in academic journals.
ForUM works with external specialists and research environments nationally and internationally, such as the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB), The Centre for Development and the Environment (SUM), The Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research (CICERO), The Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO), The Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, The Norwegian School of Management (BI), The Fafo Institute for International Studies, The Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Collaboration is centred around commissioned reports, mutual invitations of meetings/seminars, participation in committees and involvement in thematic groups. ForUM’s advisors have competencies that are drawn upon through supervising and advising students and researchers at various institutions, including BI, SUM, and FAFO.
ForUM also works closely with an international network (see below) and as a result has gained considerable knowledge regarding their politics and international processes; greater political impact has resulted from joined-up lobbying activities.
ForUM’s collaboration with the network in the Global South goes indirectly through its member’s partners in these regions, but also directly through its own policy partners. This collaboration results in important contributions and new perspectives on political processes and prioritisations. ForUM uses this collaboration directly and indirectly when shaping its own politics. This contributes to building capacity internally and at our partners in the Global South, around the topics of international processes and forming political positions.
